2. East Run is confirmed for the New Year's Eve Party music. They've been here once before and they sure can kick out some foot-stomping bluegrass. Looking forward to it. (It's rumored that The Masons may open, but I don't think that's 100% yet.)

Saturday's Music

Sat Oct 16 at 8pm:
The Holy Ghost Tent Revival
"...there are seemingly no boundaries for this group as they travel the country spreading the magic of their heart-throbbing, foot-stomping, good-time music."
"Characterized as "explosively intoxicating," Greensboro, NC's Holy Ghost Tent Revival cannot be pigeonholed into any popular genre. Melding brass with banjo, guitar, bass, drums, and keys this six-piece ensemble boasts an eclectic mash of instruments and styles -- a musical alchemy all their own.
"The overall air of their creation breathes a sense of celebration and salvation; of a raucous party where everyone's welcome and where even the most stoic will find their toes tapping and a smile breaking free. It's as if, in the same spirit as the blues greats that traveled the highways of the American psyche before them, theirs is not music to lament life's hardships but rather to celebrate in life itself; with all its hodgepodge of pleasure and pain.
"It is this transcendent energy that continuously propels Holy Ghost Tent Revival to play the heart and soul of a North Carolina-born, genre-defying new groove. With a penchant for crafting thoughtfully playful lyrics and graced with exceptional musical skills, there are seemingly no boundaries for this group as they travel the country s
preading the magic of their heart-throbbing, foot-stomping, good-time music. "

We have fresh blueberry muffins (yum, again).

Here's a picture of blueberry sauce in progress:

And a picture of our made-from-scratch New York style cheesecake with blueberry sauce and fresh blueberries:

And, yes, it's as good as it looks, maybe better (considering I'm not very adept at picture taking).

(For those of you who've been following along: No, I have not forgotten about the sidewalk updates, I'm just temporarily distracted by yummy blue fruit.)

Patio & Water Supply (yes, this post is about Streetscaping, I'm just slow to get there)

I was going to name this post Streetscaping: Dragging it Out, but I didn't want anyone to get the impression that the project is taking too long when, in fact, it's moving along rather quickly. I'm still updating about the Streetscape, but I have a bunch of other stuff I need to blather about first (I'm the one dragging it out). I'll get back to it directly...

This is (will be) the new patio:
Not much to look at yet, huh? It's ready for the concrete to be poured. The plastic (old, holey tarps) are laid out underneath the wire and the concrete truck will be here first thing Saturday morning.
It's still a bit rough around the edges, but I'm excited that it's all coming together.
If you haven't been in to check out the stage-side loft, you don't know how cool the view is from up there (will post more on that, too); from the patio, the scenery is of the hillside that overlooks Main Street with the old high school dominating. The landscaping that is planned will provide a green, relaxing space.
If you look closely at this next picture, you can just see a green garden hose in the bottom right corner going up the hill (I tell you why in the next post):
By walking to the far edge of the patio, I had a good view of the work going on in the street:
The gas company was working on their lines and the City of Grafton was working replacing the fire hydrant in preparation for the sidewalk replacement moving on down the street.

Quite industrious!
For all the hard work and to all the hard workers: Thank you for doing so much for progress in Grafton!

Downtown Streetscaping - Tuesday June 29, 2010

Grafton's Main Street 'Streetscape Phase II' started last Monday. It's been a bit dusty and noisy and congested down here with all the work. Even with the slight inconvenience, it's wonderful to see progress in downtown.

(This project has, so far, produced at least a couple of good stories - and you know how I like a good story.... This is the first of at least 3 updates related to the construction goings-ons...)

These first pictures I'm posting are after the old sidewalks had been jack-hammered and ripped up. These almost-complete views are a reminder that this whole mess will be well worth the effort in a very short time.

This picture is from Tuesday (yesterday), very early in the morning (you can see the mist in the hills in the far background) and half of the section they were pouring is already poured and ready for finishing:

Grafton's Builder's Service & Supply had one of their concrete trucks here at 6am and the guys of R&R Construction, who are doing this phase of the sidewalk replacement, were here even earlier.
This next shot is from later in the day; the concrete is still green (raw), but not goopy:
New sidewalks!
Check out this post over at the Taylor County Blog Project for an old post about the first phase of sidewalk replacement.
This second phase means that we will soon have classy streetlights on this end of town, too.
Progress is good. Messy (even goopy), sometimes, but good.

Stage Side Picture Update

PC pointed out that we didn't have current outside view pictures posted here on the site.
He took a few and I'm posting these 2:

The loft is open, too, so I should be posting some of those pics soon.
Also, the back patio concrete will be poured this weekend, so private outside seating is soon to come...

Book Signing: May 1, 4:00-6:00pm

Dr. Abigail Elizabeth Reynolds will be here this Saturday May 1st between 4:00 and 6:00pm for a reading of her newest release, The Reporter Wore Petticoats.
She'll be taking questions and autographing her novel.
Here's an excerpt -about the book- from her website:
"Amid the social and political constraints of the mid-nineteenth century, newspaper reporter Elizabeth Grace Fitzgerald shares her adventures throughout the eastern United States and Great Britain.
"Recounted with simplicity, tenderness, humor, and suspense, this fast-paced novel engages the reader in laughter, sympathy and outrage.
"Not another dull history book, this story of persons of high and low estate will fuel the reader’s desire to know more about the events of the Abolitionist and Suffrage movements, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War."

Here's a link to another blog post that I found irresitable: "Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History"

Very true, indeed.

Sideways Pies

I am the first to admit that I'm not all that tech savvy. However, sideways pictures on blogger are new to me. I've rotated them and saved them several different ways before uploading. I've even tried uploading several different ways, but these pie pictures apparently are quite happy being sideways and have no plans to change. So, rather than fight it, I'm posting them anyway (besides, they are just the slightest bit blurry and that is to be blamed on my un-tech-savviness, too).
